Today we saw history made at Carmarthenshire Karate, as seven (7!) of our students passed their 1st Dan gradings in front of Hanshi Peter Spanton (9th Dan), following the WHKK West Wales Course in our Narberth dojo. The new black belts were rewarded for their hard work and several years of dedication, which really showed as they were put through their paces by the Higashi Karate Kai chief instructor.

We’re celebrating the news from Kosovo today that Mair and Dan have both passed their European refereeing exam, giving us our very first European Referees at Carmarthenshire Karate. They follow in the footsteps of the late Keith Mumberson (chief instructor of WHKK and former World Referee), who taught Mair all the way to her 1st Dan.

This is a significant accolade for the club and will continue to bring invaluable competition knowledge and experience to our growing squad.

It was a double celebration for Dan, as he completed the first step in the kata judging qualifications too, joining Mair as a European Judge.

After a well deserved break over Christmas and the New Year, we’re all itching to get back into action, so why not take a look at our 2016 calendar to whet the appetite and make sure that you don’t miss any of those important dates. Highlights include two visits by Sensei Spanton to our dojo in Carmarthen, in addition to the three WHKK West Wales Courses that we will have with Sensei in Narberth during the year. The events calendar for our competition squad is also building gradually, with many more dates still to come.

Karate1 then went on to Almere in the Netherlands and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt – the series’ first visit to Africa – all in the build up to the European Championships in Istanbul in March and then the first European Games in Baku in June. This will be the first time that karate has been included in a multi-sport event and will be an ideal platform to showcase the excitement and competitiveness of karate to a new audience.
