The Welsh Junior Open is arguably the biggest event of the year for our junior squad; it’s the highest level of competition that they face in Wales and always attracts a number of strong teams from the rest of the British Isles too.

Our squad this year was up to the challenge and came away with several good results, including first national medals for Ben, Lucy and Charlotte and gold for Jordan and Ethan in the kata pairs. The future looks bright for many of these young competitors and we’ll give them all the support and encouragement that they need on the way. Well done team!

We were able to field a strong team at this year’s North Wales Open in Acrefair, with all of our senior squad members together again, including Rosie Williams returning from injury. The only new member of the team was Charlotte French, who was stepping up to an open championships for the first time and did exceptionally well to win a silver medal in a higher category than originally intended.

There were smiles all round for the whole team in fact, with everyone winning a medal of some description. Special mention to Ben and Yasmin who won their first medals at this level; two each too! One of which was a gold for Yasmin in the kumite, while Ana won her first gold medal in kata. There were still plenty of points to work on though, which we will be concentrating on in the build up to the Welsh Junior Open in August.

Some more new faces added to the squad for this relatively local event, including Callum Gardner who worked his way through a big category to claim a bronze medal at his first attempt. The team is developing really well now, with every individual continuing to make progress. This doesn’t always lead to medals but an improvement in performance when it happens is still a good result and that’s exactly what we got. Well done team!

It was a tough test for our squad at the WKU Championships in Weston-Super-Mare; there were several experienced competitors to contend with in every category, so no easy contests by any means. This certainly helped the whole team to raise their standards and continue their own development, which is all we ever ask for. Well done team!

Following the successful grading examinations in March, our attention returned to competition karate for our second junior club tournament of the year. More karate kids were taking part for the first time, trying their hand at kata and kumite in a competition environment, together with several of our young squad members getting in as much practice as they can before the next championships in May.

Once again, there were some excellent performances from both new and experienced competitors, all of which giving encouraging signs for the continued development of the Carmarthenshire Karate squad.

In the first of a series of Junior Club Tournaments this year, we had more than forty karate kids having a go at kata and kumite competition in Carmarthen dojo. Some were there for the first time while others had a bit more competition experience and were looking to put their training to the test.

Several competitors put themselves into contention for selection, for our next squad event – the KSE6 Invitational Championships in Gloucester – through their performances.
